February might feel like a break in the year. You have been through a few months of winter, but spring still feels a little way off. Are you looking for something to do? Mark these items off your home maintenance checklist to keep your home clean, organized, and toasty.

Clean entryway floors

• Use appropriate storage to keep your entryway floor clean.

• Consider installing hooks for jackets, a boot drop-off rack, a doormat inside, and host open storage boxes to reduce dirt accumulation.

• Vacuum or sweep the floor. Dust the entire space, eliminate cobwebs, and clean light fittings and artworks.

• Give your floor a gleaming shine using a damp mop and suitable cleaners for your tile or hardwood floor.

Organize bookshelves

• Consider removing items that do not belong to the bookshelf.

• You may stack the books in groups for easy access.

• Consider decorating the shelf with accessories and potted plants to enhance its aesthetics.

Boost warmth

• Consider letting sunlight in during the day to make use of free heat.

• Move your furniture away from the radiator so that warm air can circulate freely.

• Installing insulation throughout the loft helps maximizing home heating.

• If you have a hot water tank, check if it is properly lagged or insulated.

• Install self-adhesive rubber seals around doors and windows.

Check bathrooms for moisture, mildew, and mold

• Check for visible mold at home that can be green, white, blue, or black, and they may be fuzzy or slimy looking. Bathroom mold is mostly grey, black, or deep brown appearance and woolly texture.

• Apart from visible molds, you can check for a musty smell and wall damage at home.

• Even the soft spots on your bathroom floor or ants in your bathroom are all signs of moisture, mold, or mildew.

• If mold or mildew infestation is caught early, you can easily handle it with household cleaners but for extensive problems, consider hiring a professional.

Clean the dryer vent

• Check the exterior vent while the dryer is running to make sure it is opening freely.

• Inspect the hinges for rust and oil lightly with a lubricant if required.

• Use your hand or a long-handled, wire brush to remove clogging lint or debris.

• If the vent cover is dirty, mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid in warm water and scrub away the soil with a brush or old cloth.

• Avoid planting large, dense shrubs in front of the outside dryer vent to prevent the vent from any blockage.

Be fire smart

• Install smoke detectors alarms that can detect carbon monoxide.

• Consider replacing the batteries of smoke detectors once a month to ensure they are still functional.

• Keep your detectors clean and free of cobwebs and dust to avoid false alarms.

• Try to get all your fire extinguishers from the same manufacturer as different instructions from multiple manufacturers might turn out confusing in case of fire.

• Prepare everyone in your family to be fire smart and know fire escape plan.
