Although it may seem like the civilian work force is a stark contrast from active military duty, WIN Home Inspection Fisher, Ind. Jason Vernier has found many similarities between his Navy service and business ownership.
“The training I received in the Navy is absolutely critical to what I do now,” Vernier said. “My background in aviation safety gave me an eye for safety that I get to use every day, and the military discipline taught me how to be a successful franchise owner.”
From Aviation Safety to Home Safety
Vernier served three tours with Navy, in a variety of roles including water survival instruction, aviation medicine technician and water survival instructor. After some close calls, he and his family decided it was time for a safer option. Vernier transitioned to an aviation safety position, which required inspections and is where he picked up his eye for safety.
Retiring from the military after 22 years, Vernier knew he wanted to get into a strong franchise network that focused on professionalism and customer service. Vernier researched veteran-friendly franchise concepts and with his background in inspection and safety monitoring for the Navy, WIN was an ideal match. The connection with the brand and the leadership team was immediate.
Excelling in the Environment
The structured environment of the military has proven beneficial for Vernier as he heads into his second year of running his own business. Aspects from the chain of command to the uniforms made the transition to civilian life – and life as an entrepreneur – simpler for him.
“It’s like I’m the captain of my ship,’’ he said. “This year isn’t even over yet, and I’ve been able to complete 300 inspections on my own. I’m looking to add to my team and grow even more in my community.”
Vernier has found his technical military skills help him evaluate homes and their potential problems areas. Other life traits emphasized in the military like punctuality, honesty and integrity have carried over for Vernier and make a difference to his clients.
Tips for Success
Vernier believes the parallels between his home inspection franchise and his career in the military would carry over for other veterans considering investing in a business.
“I saw this job as a new duty station,’’ he said. “Finding these similarities has really helped me convert back into working life successfully.”
A Great Opportunity for Veterans
Named one of the best franchises for veterans by Military Times, WIN Home Inspection is committed to the success of its veteran franchisees. With nearly 30 a third of its franchisees being military veterans, the home inspection industry has proven to be a great fit for those who served.
“We’re blessed to have a number of WIN business owners that are veterans,” said Steve Wadlington, WIN President. “We’ve found that if you are a veteran at a fairly senior level, you naturally have a business-minded mentality, and we simply have to help you understand how our brand works. If you’re someone who’s not been in a leadership role, the value you bring is you’re someone who understands process and can execute the plans that we have.”
Since founding its own “WIN for America” veterans’ program in 2012, WIN Home Inspection has helped countless veterans achieve the dream of owning their own business through extensive training, support and financial assistance.
