If the home inspection revealed some issues with your new home, but you decided to buy anyway, you'll need some tools to fix a few things.
All of your maintenance needs were probably taken care of while living in an apartment, but you're responsible for repairs in your home. When shopping for tools, consider how much you can afford and what you need. There's no need to pack a shed full of saws, drills and other items that you won't use often. Here are some items to pick up at the home improvement store:
- Toolbox
- Claw hammer
- Set of screwdrivers
- Adjustable wrench
- Needle-nose pliers
- Tape measure
- Cordless drill
- Level
- Electronic stud finder
- Locking pliers
- Utility knife
- Chisels
- Safety gear, including goggles, dust masks and gloves
- Hardware, including screws and nails
- Flashlight
With these items in hand, you should be able to take care of basic home maintenance. Also, purchase a ladder for those hard-to-reach places. Although you're responsible for maintenance in your home, there are some tasks that you shouldn't take on by yourself. Call professionals for electrical, roofing, plumbing and demolition repairs, as small errors can lead to big expenses.
